After deciding to utilize a pencil or pencil-like object to emulate the berimbau, I began practicing the sections of the piece that required its use. One would think that banging a pencil across guitar strings would require little effort to achieve the desired effect, however, I quickly learned there was more to it.
I found that where on the guitar one strikes with the pencil can alter the tone. Classical guitarists will often shift the position of the right hand while plucking normally to give tonal colour to certain phrase. I was surprised to learn this could also be achieved using this percussive pencil technique.
An example of the pencil technique. Allowing the pencil to bounce on the vibrating string.
An example of the percussive use of the pencil. Similar to the Tambora technique commonly used on the classical guitar.
